Coliseum 1921 Cafe

On a lunch appointment and not sure where to go for, we decided to try out Coliseum Cafe which located at LG Floor, Mid Valley Megamall. It seems to be one of the many visitors cafe among all.

The Coliseum Café and Grill Room is a fine example of how West and East have assimilated tastefully to present a unique Western Hainanese cuisine. ‘Selamat Datang’ as they welcome you to enjoy a tasty selection that has evolved over the years through the influence of the British Colonial Era and the assimilation of Asian taste buds.

The Coliseum Café and Grill Room started in 1921 before WWII and some nine decades and generations later, still continues to operate in the same premises at one of the Kuala Lumpur oldest street, Batu Road (originally a path leading to Batu village where mining activities took place – now known as Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (named after Malaysia’s First King).  The restaurant’s ambiance is a typical of a colonial grillroom, retaining many of its original wood interior and trimmings.  Dignitaries, ministries, customers, diners and guests alike, locals and tourists, have forged a special connection to the place, the people and its varied menu spread.

In the early days, the restaurant & hotel served the British who worked and lived in then Malaya.  It was patronised by government officers, prime ministers, tin miners, writers (W. Somerset Maugham), planters, traders and military personnel together with their families who swung by for tea, cocktails and dinner. Over time, the Western Colonial cuisine evolved into its own unique style as the Hainanese chefs, immigrants from China, concocted their own interpretation of many a western dish.

We managed to try out their 2 different types of chicken chop dishes. The chicken chop and sauces taste fine. As for the french fries served together wasn't up to my expectation. I fried better french fries than they do... . Theirs are soggy.

Maybe next time round, I will try on their baked crabmeat, hot pie & dessets; hopefully it won't disappoint me.
